Fish Love Sea
Twenty years of this old town
twenty years of running around twenty years of ups and downs off and on with you Two grown kids up and gone you and I standing all alone inside four empty walls wondering how to turn the love lights back on And I loved you as much as the fish love the sea and I loved you as much as the stars love the sky without the sky the stars would cry I loved you that much ‘till the day I die Years of joy years of pain held us together like a ball and chain what’ll we do with what remains of the day Remember when were still young I took your hand and sang you this song what’ll we do now that our song is half sung I loved you as much As the fish love the sea…. Just can’t remember how long it’s been since I dared to try and love you and I just can’t remember how long it’s been since you dared to love me too Remember, I loved you remember, you loved me look at “pink coconut” sitting in a tree big blue eyes deep and wide as our love could be And I loved you as much As the fish love the sea…. |

A Well Respected Man
(Ray Davies 1965)
‘Cause he gets up in the morning and he goes to work at nine and he comes back home at 5:30 gets the same train every time ‘cause his world is built on punctuality it never fails And he’s “Oh so good” and he’s “Oh so fine” and he’s “Oh so healthy” in his body and his mind he’s a well respected man about town doing the best things so conservatively And his mother goes to meetings while his father paws the maid and she serves the tea with counselors while discussing foreign trade and she passes looks as well as bills to every suave young man And he’s “oh so good….” And he likes his own back yard and he likes his fags the best ‘cause he’s better than the rest and his own sweat smells the best and he hopes to grab his father’s loot when his Pater passes on And he’s “Oh so good….” And he plays the stocks and shares and he goes to the regatta he adores the girl next door cause he’s dying to get at her but his mother knows the best about the matrimonial states And he’s “Oh so good….” |

Left Out In The Rain
Holding out for money
staying in good health frantic for her daddy left up on a shelf looking for an image lost inside herself just a little accident you know could hurt oneself But when she sings It’s like a symphony left out in the rain left out in the rain and when she cries it’s like a memory left out in the rain left out in the rain She climbed up on a mountain dizzy from the height couldn’t turn no miracles just turned out the light crying out for daddy losing sight of fright she stepped into the darkness and fell right through the night But when she sings It’s like a symphony Left out in the rain Left out in the rain and when she cries It’s like a memory Left out in the rain Left out in the rain But when she moves she’s like a sky kite a sky kite that’s broke its string she blowed ‘n blowed she blowed ‘n blowed so freely like to blow away that rain she blowed and blowed she blowed and blowed so freely like to blow away that rain She climbed up on a mountain dizzy from the height couldn’t turn no miracles just turned out the light |

In Her Room
She’s going off to school
leaving home to stay and she’s going far so far away oh, it should be a really great day! But I’m sitting in her room singing to a pale blue moon where there used to be a mess now just emptiness singing by the claire de la lune And the little girl is in my heart I smile through the tears when the memories start to come again I walk by her room, it’s dark the little girl is shining in my heart There are photos on the wall memories ten foot tall there are rings and things and fairy wings oh, I hope she remembers to call! And the little girl is in my heart… And I’ll reach for the memories when I was a boy to try to explain the pain that I feel and I hope to find the truth in the little things in life like what you feel when you first go off to school And the little girl is in my heart… And she’s going off to school and her daddy’s feeling low hope she uses what she’s got and learns a lot remembers when and how to say “no” |

Endless Sleep
The night was black
rain fallin’ down looked for my baby she’s nowhere around traced her footsteps down to the shore afraid she’s gone for ever more I looked at the sea and it seemed to say I took your baby from you away I heard a voice crying in the deep come join me baby in my endless sleep Why did we quarrel? why did we fight? why did I leave her alone tonight that’s why her foot steps ran into the sea that’s why my baby has gone from me I looked at the sea… Ran in the water heart full of fear there in the breakers I saw her near reached for my darling held her to me stole her away from the angry sea I looked at the sea And it seemed to say you took your baby from me away my heart cried out “she’s mine to keep” I saved my baby from an endless sleep |

Ball of Yarn
Some say she’s cold
some say she’s hot some say she’s hungry got a strong appetite for my slow cookin’ cat-nippin’ long lastin’ day-trippin’ ball of yarn Some say she’s better down some say she’s up some say she’s losing ground don’t press your luck always fast-trackin’ some side-steppin’ jive-talkin’ back street alley kat Street dogs in the house mice in the barn street dogs in the house mice in the barn can’t distract my kitty kat from her ball of yarn Some say she purrs some say she pouts some say she’s quiet some say she shouts always looking hot-footing some corner-cuttin’ hole-hopping wicked mouse Street dogs in the house… Some say she’s gentle some say she’s fine some say she’s “Oh so sweet!” can turn any kat’s eyes with her inscrutable irresistible backscratching fast-acting kitty kat charm Street dogs in the house…. Some say she’s low down some say she’s cruel some say she’s downright mean but that ain’t the rule thank the Lord “Oh Lord!” she’s got her ball of yarn Street dogs in the house… |

Wooden Indians
It’s late at night
fluorescent light it’s all that’s left on my black and white TV it don’t seem to pay to work all day for sleepless nights that steal away the years Wooden Indians, wooden hearts wooden faces never laugh wooden Indians, wooden hearts wooden faces never cry Pushing numbers slumping shoulders boss man cracks criticisms colder than a whip broken minds lost in time twist and turn like rusted signs in the wind Wooden Indians, wooden hearts…. And I’d walk a mile for a country smile where the song of love is the sound of life where the late show is a friend by the fireside where the late show is a friend by the fireside Wooden Indians, wooden hearts… Its late at night fluorescent light is all that’s left on my black and white TV |

Heart Attack
Got twenty years to go
‘Till the end of the rainbow gold watch retiree marking time in corridors of power losing sight of the forest for the trees there’s an eagle in the sky with a tear in his eye a little boy on a hill with a dream wild card, the path with heart lost and forgotten it seems Heart Attack! Heart Attack! Can’t look forward Can’t turn back Heart Attack! Boy eternal on the nine-to-five treadmill in an airtight steel n’ glass box where the view is fine from the 54th floor of the Hollywood sign on the LA mountain tops in the executive suites high above the streets just in reach of the power and money games a little voice cries down deep inside “Do you remember my name?” Heart attack! Heart Attack!.... Sweet child from our youth Sweet child from our youth Don’t lose your heart or your dreams In the executive suites high above the streets just in reach of the power and money games a little voice cries down deep inside “Do you remember my name?” “I’m the eagle in the sky with a tear in his eye a little boy on a hill with a dream wild card, the path with heart lost but now found at last” Heart Attack! Heart Attack! Gotta look forward Can’t turn back! Heart Attact! Heart Attack! |

Yesterday's Child
Sometimes in the morning
when dreaming’s run me down sometimes in the morning I want to cry out loud I feel like a woman giving birth to a child sometimes in the morning when dreaming’s run me down Sometime yesterday when I was just a child I thought I knew the answers and the reasons why I smiled I thought I was living but I never quite found out the reasons for the answers of yesterday’s child Sometimes the answers they come in our dreams sometimes they fall like the rain sometimes they’re found in the face of a child but some answers don’t come without pain some answers don’t come without pain Sometimes in the evening I reach for my friend sometimes in the evening I need a helping hand I feel like I’m dying from things not yet said sometimes in the evening I need a loving hand Sometime tomorrow looking back today I’ll think about what we’ve done and just what was said I might ask the same questions staring at the sun blinded by the answers of a child of my own Sometimes the answers they come in our dreams sometimes they fall like the rain sometimes they’re found in the face of a child but some answers don’t come without pain some answers don’t come without pain They say the answer is blowing in the wind but some answers don’t come without pain |

True Love
If you don’t love me
why did you hold me and rock’n roll me the way you did the other night. and if you don’t care just tell me so this dance is over and it’s time to go I’m a man trying hard as I can with this aching heart I don’t fully understand whatever it is you’re thinking whatever it is you’re feeling I can’t believe you really understand what you’re doing to me I’m so damn tired of being lost and found so love exhausted this poor heart is just breaking down so here I stand warm heart and cold hands with this empty feeling try to understand I’m a man Trying hard as I can…. And if we never know another and if we say we belong together but if we never learn to touch each other’s hearts how will we ever know true love But if you still love me and if the truth still lies in your tender touch, dear and the look in your eye then take my heart in your tender warm hands try to melt the heartache and try and understand I’m a man Trying hard as I can…. |

Loving You
Yellow-dawning August moon
dying in the sweet of night floats like an ancient dream ‘Cross the summer sky I’m playing with sticks in phosphorus leaving trails of starry universe behind Loving you Loving you Loving you Over winding forest paths jumping logs running by the sea skipping stones and laughter break the sleeping sound, I’m waking up to a new day shining through the windows of your eyes and your smile Loving you…. Gentle grace and family friends still-life by the fireside simple lines, clicking photographs hanging in the air I’m reaching out for how to say take my hand and walk me home from yesterday Loving you… |

Novi Mir
It’s high noon in the East
midnight in the West rich man sells the poor man’s food and the people get no rest stretch out your hand stretch out your heart look a man straight in his eyes and let the truth come out Do you know where we’ve been? do you know what we’ve dreamed? do you know what we know? do we really mean the same thing friends? or are we only making sounds SUNG IN RUSSIAN (English in italics) Let the word of peace go out east and west north and south to the rhythm of our beating hearts Listen to the laughter vodka mixed with scotch East and West are reaching out ‘Cross the nightmares from the past Do you know where we’ve been.... Whatever is the matter what troubles so your mind there’s something wrong I know way down deep in the soul of mankind SUNG IN RUSSIAN (English in italics) May the winds of change clear cloudy skies forever while love and peace for you and me shine like starlight in the night Do you know where we’ve been…. Governments do us violence people make the peace dream a dream of Novi Mir there’ll be dancing in the streets Do you know where we’ve been…. |
